ASI294MC Pro and Binning

Hi All,

Recently bought the ASI294MC Pro and I am learning to use it. The product manual provides almost no description around how binning is implemented or when it would be appropriate to use 1x1 vs 2x2 and so on.

In fact, I have found very little info talking about this in general. Can someone point me to a reference that would help me to understand why and when I would use the different bin options?

I know binning was super important to handle noise in CCDs, but Cooled CMOS behaves differently and I wanted to understand this better for this camera.

Hi Sir,

This is the description quoted in ASICAP help ducoment.

"Bin usually has four options: Bin1, Bin2, Bin3, and Bin4. The number after Bin indicates that several pixels are combined into one pixel. For example, Bin2 indicates that 4 pixels are combined into one pixel (2*2=4). Bin3 means that 9 pixels are combined into one pixel (3*3=9), and Bin1 means no pixel combination. Note: Under the Binning mode, as binning is increased, the resolution is decreasedbutfieldofviewremainsthesame."

And if the camera is oversampled, then you can use bin to adjust the image.

Thank you - I was looking in the camera manual rather than the software utility guide.

So I get why it would make sense to bin in the case where you are over sampled.

Is the sample and scope/imager pixel scale the main reason for choosing a binning level?

Are there other considerations I should consider? Sorry if these are basic questions but I am just trying to understand this better so I can make intelligent imaging decisions.

Hi you can also use bin when you do focusing, it will give you faster speed since the image size is smaller.
