I have had very good luck just leaving my 294 on 120 all the time. The more exposures you take of any given object, the less noise you will have. With just a single exposure you will always notice a very grainy appearance. That is just a lack of information. Every additional exposure you take will lessen that grainy appearance. There is no substitute for exposure time. If you take short exposures, you’ll just have to take more. If you take long exposures, less will give similar results, but so much can go wrong in long exposures that sometimes it is not worth the risk.
