I have a problem with my asi1600mm pro camera.
TL;DR: got oblong stars when cooler is on.
My camera is 2.5 years old and last week i spotted this weird oblong stars.
Nothing wrong with my setup in general:
- guiding is pretty good, rms is always under 1”
- balance is perfect, no wires pull etc
- no crazy winds outside, good seeing
I made a lot of tests during two nights, and here is how my problem looks like:
- enable cooling (tried -20 and -10 degrees)
- stars shape is good when cooler is on for ~ 15%
- when cooler stars rotating for more than 30% i got oblong stars
- if i switch off cooling, stars become immediately perfect
And again, doesn’t depend on seeing or telescope position, guiding is good.

So my questions are:
- Do i need to do some maintenance for cooler? Like take it out, clean the dust, check blades etc. How can i determine that something is wrong with it?
- Do i need to request replacement cooler from zwo or i can just buy something similar in local pc shops?
