I think a lot of the cameras maintain a low moisture environment inside the camera with some desiccant tablets to prevent dew from forming. This all depends on the unit being tightly sealed. By removing the AR window you would be exposing the sensor to the ambient air and be more likely to get dew directly on your sensor, for really no benefit that I can think of.
As far as the distance between the window and the sensor I'm not sure,
