cpl42 BTW: Has anyone attached a large capacity portable disk drive, eg. 2-4TB in size?
Yes, I am using a Samsung 2TB T5 SSD, without any problem. Bus powered and all, on its own USB port in a second generation ASIAIR.
It has been "permanently" connected to an ASIAIR that is left outdoors in a waterproof ABS box for at least a year now, perhaps two or more, through the Oregon rainstorms and occasional snow at 900 ft ASL. I don't remember when I added the T5 -- will need to check my old notes; I had earlier used a 256GB Patroit Rage flash drive, which worked fine too, but the T5 is better in pretty much every aspect.
A Samsung T7 might not work though, unless through a powered USB hub, but you won't need a T7 anyway, ASIAIR cannot keep up with the T5 as is.
I download my data through Ethernet, and had never had to touch the SSD all this time. Pretty maintainance free.
