OK, tonight was the second time I really had a chance to use my new EAF. Hooked up all usb cables to the usual spots, powered up AAP and made WiFi conn to iPad. Tried to manual focus on Polaris so I could do PA, the focus control showed the setting was zero. Last time I used EAF it had focused and the setting showed 30000 something…now it’s on zero and if I tried to focus up or down it beeps about three or four times, the zero turns red and nothing happens, it doesn’t turn one tiny bit. I tried another usb cable, different usb connections ( 2.0 or 3.0), reset AAP, rebooted iPad. Lessened grub screw on focus knob of OTA and turned in inward about three turns, tightend grubs back up. Nothing changed, still stuck on zero and beeps several times, turns zero red and doesn’t do squat. This is about enough, right out of the box EAF wouldn’t power up from any usb connections on AAP. I had to buy usb hub to plug into just to get powered up. First night out it worked great! Now it’s a bad joke….

Hello danoglide65,
In the last two years I've owned 5 EAFs, one of them had a backlash of about 300 steps sooo ... are some EAFs POSs? Yes, I agree! But even so it should still at least turn. Are you able to edit the "Current Position" in the EAF settings menu of the AAP? If so set it to something like 25000 then repeat your focusing attempt.

WalterT I tried to edit the current position in settings several times several different numbers. Each time the number goes to zero in red and beeps 3 or 4 times. Tried to run EAF on ASIStudio. Failed there too. Removed EAF from mount and tried, nope did no good. If I hit the up or down button while holding EAF in my hand it “bumps” a tiny bit but that’s all.

Did you check the Max Step Limit field? (In ASICAP, click on Advanced checkbox. In ASIAIR, it is in the Focuser Setting Window.) The Max Step Limit will restrict the range of number that you can enter into Current Position.

I had mentioned Max Step Limit in a different thread.

      It’s on zero, fine-10, coarse-150, max step limit-0, backlash-0. I did try 10-30 in backlash.

        danoglide65 max step limit-0

With that, your EAF travel range is from 0 to 0. That is why it won't move.

If you want the EAF to move, set the Max Step Limit to a non zero number. The EAF range will then be from 0 to that number.

          Like 60000? Does it matter?

Yes, it matters; that is why there is a limit.

Make the EAF reach its max limit before your drawtube bottoms out. That would prevent the EAF from pushing the rack and pinion focuser past its limit and potentially causing harm.

w7ay Set Max to 65535 (it will tell you what the max is also, for example if you set it to 70000, it will say Max is 65535 (or thereabouts)).

Then once you find focus, set your 'current' to 30000 so for easy use, that way you'll have no issue moving in or out at all.

Thanks everybody! I’ll give this a try ASAP this morning. But I can’t understand one thing…this is the second time I really tried EAF, the first time it ran fine. I didn’t pay much attention to the max setting number, it was what is was and it worked fine. Now when I tried EAF the number in max changed to zero. Pretty sure I didn’t change it. Also the number shown when focused automatically was 30052-ish, when I tried setting up the other night that number was zero.

Wooo hooo! Changing the max travel limit back to 60000 fixed the problem! I didn’t pay much attention to the settings the first time out, I tend to leave well enough alone but somehow it was changed to zero. And that was the problem! Thanks everybody!!
