How to dismount USB drive without turning off

I used to turn off the Air before pulling the USB drive, but in a hurry last night, I just pulled it out. Air complained with a message that it wasn't dismounted properly. Is there a method for dismount while the Air is still running?

Open the Files Manager window (if USB device is selected, the menu icon looks like a small thumb drive).

If the USB drive is being used, you will see two rows of devices on the top right of that window (for example, an SD or eMMC drive, and the USB drive). Select the drive that is not the USB drive. This will dismount the USB drive.

I did use that method last night with my Air Pro, choosing onboard memory first but got the same message, "USB device disconnected improperly. Eject the drive safely first". I retried with the Air Pro just now to verify, and got the same result. Then I tried it with my Air Plus, and it did work as you say. Bottom line - I'll use your suggestion with both Pro and Plus from now on.
