Bit depth in images

I've just replaced my spc900 with an asi120mc. One of the attractions is it's quoted 12 bit resolution. How does it handle the 12bits? The firecapture histograms show a max value of 255 (8 bits) and opening images in IRIS also show a max value of 255. Do I need special software to use the full 12 bits, or is the shown 255 a normalised value and actually represents 4096?

You just need to enable 16bit output under FC

we put the 12bit data in the head of 16bit data
