Foobaria The goal would to simply produce monochrome images instead of color at the full resolution of the camera.
Because of the Bayer filters on top of a "color" sensor, you will not be able to recover a full resolution monochrome image from a color sensor.
Each photosite only has the red, green, and blue components of the luminence. You will need to interpolate (and often after low pass filtering) for the actual lunimence at each photosite. In fact, none of the pixels from a "color" CMOS camera will show true luminence.
