USB 3 HUB And frame rates.

Good day,

I know it is advised everywhere not to connect the ASI120MC via an HUB and definitively not via an USB3

Well I just went head and did it....

Since I have this camera, (about 2 months) due to cloudy weather I have only tested it in daylight mounted on my Meade LS6" aiming at far away object

The connecting set up is as follow:

Laptop Asus N53J intel I-7 16gig connected to a USB 3 powered HUB with a 4mt long USB3 cable.

My scope Meade LS6", Canon Eos 1100D and ASI120MC all connected to the USB3 HUB with 4,8 mt USB2 high speed cables.

All equipment is switched on and everyone working nicely together.

On the ASI120MC I got those results.

On max resolution a got about 19 fr/sec.

On lower resolutions:

960 x 960 - about 40 fr/sec

480x320 - 135 fr/sec.

And on 320 x 240 - 217 fr/sec

I'm Impressed that it can achieve this rates with an HUB and with such long cables...

Hopefully the sky will clear one of those days so that I can check it for real.

the hub i use is this one, but I think you could use any USB3 HUB with external POWER supply (this is important, other way you will not have enough power to drive your USB users) and it must be backward compatible with USB2 :

This HUB comes with a short USB 3 cable (+/-1mt) to connect to the Laptop, I have put en USB-3 extension cable type A Male to type A female in between any good quality one will do, please note that the maximum TOTAL length From the HUB to the laptop is 5 mt (4mt is better)

From the USB-3 HUB to the cameras and mount I have just used standard USB2 high speed cables.

the maker of those cables is not really important, just make sure that they are good quality cables, and that the total length from the HUB to the USB2 users is under the 5mt the ones I used were for example from HAMA.
