ASI120MC - IR/UV Filter?

Hi,

Not sure if this is possible but I read a post in another forum that suggests you can add an IR 742 filter to achieve more stable image lunar capture. For a mono camera its a case of simply adding the filter to your camera. But for colour camera you need to remove the existing IR/UV filter. Is this possible with the ASI 120MC, I guess it has a filter built in? I appreciate this may void any warranty but if it a simple procedure that can be reversed easily then it maybe worth looking into.

Here in the UK we suffer from the effects of the Jetstream that often comes across so I am keen in finding a method of reducing the atmospheric effect.

yes, you can remove the IR-UV filter by unscrew the cover and take out it from the backside

but the sensor is very easy to become dirty if you removed the protect window

Hi Sam,

Are you saying that you cannot remove the filter without leaving off the protective window?

Or are saying take care not to leave the protective window off?

Ok so as a follow up to this thread I raised a while back. I was reading a thread in an Astro forum about using an IR Filter to reduce atmospheric turbulence when imaging the Moon.

Now I have a ZWO ASI 120MC (USB3) which I believe comes with a built in IR Filter. Further down the thread someone mentions if you have a colour camera you need to remove the existing IR filter first?

I then came across this link on the website from where I purchased my ASI 120MC from:

If I purchase and then screw the Cut Off filter on do I still need to remove the built in filter?

I guess I do but the description of the item does not suggest that this is required.

But then will I not simply have two IR Filters which is probably not sensible?

I really don’t want to tamper with my camera if I can avoid it.

use a R filter help to freezing seeing too

color camera is not very sensitive in IR range

so I don't recommend you to do that

and the 1.25" filter is only used for old USB2.0 camera upgrade only

Hello,

I have a similar question. Usually I use a 742nm or 802nm IR pass filter for planets. The ASI120MC-S, however, has an IR cut filter. Is it possible to replace it with an AR coated glass, the more to use the IR pass filter? Is that even make sense? Is it possible to get the AR coated glass as spare parts and replace the IR cut filter?
