Thanks. So you also confirm the official version. Yes, I am now doing as you describe, but I am still wondering why one would not want the pin to reach all the way into the mount? If you'd screw the longer side all the way into the plate, it will give an additional connection between plate and mount aside from the 3xM6 bolts. I might be under a misconception but it feels counter intuitive to me that you would want to pass on that - it seems the pin was intentionally designed that way to NOT reach into the mount and I am wondering why.
Obviously, with the shorter side pointing down, the tripod spreader only barely reach up to the tripod legs even if fully screwed in, but that's a different topic.
