Problem with Firecapture

Hi..

I have installed the new USB 3 174MM and it runs fine with firecapture under USB 2.0. If I run it under USB 3.0 the frame rate under full mode doing 3000 frames runs at 67fps up to 700 frames and then drops to 30fps ish and is very jerky .. ie starts and stops. tried different USB traffic settings etc.

Hope someone can shed light on this.

Your hard disk probably can't keep up with writing the data. Initially the data is written into a buffer so you get a high frame rate but when the buffer fills up things slow down. You could try a SSD or a RAM disk.

Thank you .. I will check that out, this is a brand new state of the art laptop but I can see that this looks like the problem.

De-fragmenting the hard disk can sometimes help as well, as it can reduce the disk head movement.

Depends what your hard drive is and if/how RAM is used for buffering. Stock HDDs are rarely picked by performance. Among laptop HDDs it's quite hard to find one with such fast writes (easier for PC bigger HDDs). SSD is an option but you have to pay more for the same storage (a lot more if it's 1 TB etc.). Other option is a high end fast rotating HDD that has benchmark-confirmed performance ;)
