174 mc colour problem

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a 174mc to use with my 11" edge for planetary/lunar imaging. I am having a problem getting the camera to record in colour and wondering if anyone has a solution ? When I tick the debayer option in fire capture the picture is still mono??? Thanks for any help

Did you set FireCapture to 16 bit? If so, disable 16 bit. 16 bit capture is not worth it anyway.

It's much more efficient to capture in mono and then convert to color during processing. This will save three times the video file size.

Thanks topboxman, I've not set fire capture to 16bit . Actually I thought that was only an option for the mono version camera .

If 16 bit is selected, it disables deBayer check box of FireCapture so that was what I was thinking and why I made the suggestion.

If 16 bit was not checked, then I am not sure why you are not seeing color image during capture. Have you tried testing during the day and see if you get color?

Yea I'm running the latest edition of fire capture. I'm also testing during daylight as the weather has been poor . Im assuming there's no reason why the camera wouldn't record in colour during daylight? I've also noticed I need to put gain and exposure relatively high even in daylight , surely this isn't correct ?

can you try to adjust the WB_R and WB_B to see if any color change?

Yea I've tried to adjust the wblue and wred but the whole screen turns red \blue . I'm confused is this a mono sensor ?

Disable debayer in FireCapture. Take a few seconds of video in mono and play back with either AutoStakkert!2 or Registax6 and see if the playback converted to color properly.

If it was a mono camera, I don't think deBayer would be enabled in FireCapture and you should not see any color at all.

It's also possible that the window over the sensor is NOT UV-IR cut filter which could explain strange looking color. If you happen to have UV-IR cut filter laying around, use that and test it.

ASI224 has a clear glass protection cover there is no IR filter inside and as previously mentioned explains the muted colors you share with us in your picture.

You simply need to add the proper filter for best results. The Sony 224 chip is available in color only - no monochrome examples are available at this time.
