Asi 120 MM + Asi 120 MC

Dear all,

I've both and i like to know if it's possible take luminance with 120MM and chrominance with 120MC? If yes, how may i put the colors on the luminance?

There is no fixed values for frame counts. Some doing DS imaging most time spent on the L channel, and shoot quick RGB. For planetary imaging you won't be able to use the L filter without ADC (dispersion corrector), but you could try using yellow (high) or orange (lower altitude) visual longpass filter as luminance for some planets in such case.

Ok but if i don't want use filters, could i take 30 sec videos ( for example ) first with 120mm and then with 120mc? there is a way to use the colors taken with 120mc?

I guess you can always try.

I did not pay much attention to the RGB channels from my 120mc raw frame, but they are there so in theory an L channel can add value, just don't know how much.

WinJUPOS can combine RGB image with mono luminance channel as well as align images and fix planet rotation. So you can use two cameras for planets.

I would suggest an eyepiece turret or flip mirror to mount two cameras and just switch between them at will. Orange or red visual filter on the mono camera for clear luminance (or brighter if you use ADC).

I think he wants to try without any filters or other accessories, just a 120mc and 120mm.

I have a mono ordered but have not used one before. Could he simply shoot a set of colors with the 120mc, replace with 120mm and shoot a set of black and white as L channel?

The one shot image will have RGB channels, he can add the L channel from 120mm to the RGB during processing. I have no idea what will that look like, but worth the try.

Yes FirstC8, i mean that. May i take 2 different videos changing the cameras an then use winjupos?? I have no binocular or flipmirror. Are the 120mm and 120mc parafocals? Sorry but what is ADC?

Mono camera without any filter won't give a good image on high resolution due to atmospheric dispersion. That's why I suggested using a red/orange visual filter to limit the dispersion below detection level. ADC is atmospheric dispersion corrector that can correct for dispersion and allow imaging planets with L/(no filter). You can screw the filter to the 120MM nosepiece. Refocus will likely be required.

Like what I suspected.

Since you already have the mono cam, I would wait and get a filter wheel with at least LRGB filters, possibly even an Ha narrow band filter.

I am doing this myself after realizing my 120mc had reached its limit what it could do.

This is a Saturn's shadow ring study with an old asi120mm ( without st4 ) and achro 150/1200 refractor without ircut. With a red/orange filter on achro i'll have some problem. Now i'll use a meade 10"SC, could a yellow filter works well like an orange? I've to use ircut too? I've a red filter but i think must to be used only on the moon. On jupiter/saturn i must increase exposure a lot "killing" the framerate....

The lower the target is and the higher the aperture the redder the filter should be. Visual yellow, orange, red are longpass filters - they pass part of the visual spectrum + IR . You use it without IR/UV cut.

No. The reason Ir/UV cut is used is to get proper color balance with a color camera. The point of filters like Baader IR-pass, Astronomik ProPlanet 742 and those visual red/orange/yellow filters with a mono camera is to shoot including infrared but skipping most it not all of the visual light.

Longer red/infrared are dispersed in much much smaller way and allow getting much clearer images than in visible light.

So if seeing isn't that good and RGB looks like so:

Yellow cuts out blue, orange cuts most of green, red cuts out green. The more those cut the slightly dimmer they will be but the image quality will increase. For Saturn you can go all in with red, but for Jupiter you would want to use as bright as possible to get better colors on L-RGB type image (IR-RGB Jupiter will be more pink instead of brown).

that's the point of imaging of long wavelengths - you cut the shorter starting from blue then green and then even red. You can't too much though or the image will be to dim - that's why deep IR fllters are good on Venus but not on Saturn
