The only complaint you have so far is you could not see the object from a 6sec exposure, and that was before the frame was stretched. What I am saying is, that is the norm not exception.
Based on my experience, other than maybe a few brightest DSOs (M42, M57), I have never been able to see them at 6sec exposure without stretching. So if I were you, I'd shoot him a PM, kindly ask him what was his experience. Was he able to see M51 in his 6sec sub without stretching? If not, then maybe it is not the end of the world. If he could, he might help you to troubleshoot.
You say your subs were dark, were they pitch dark without any stars? Or just that you could not see the DSO? Pask has the closet setup as you, and used the same techniques, he seemed a very helpful person, which was why I suggested talk to him.
