ASI 174MC color cooled

How good is this camera against say the Atik 414EX color.

What about faint DSO's?

There are no reviews out there in Google land.

Color IMX174 is quite poor due to strong amp glow (at least in current generation of cameras, QHY was working on some hardware solution).

Are you referring to the ASI174MC cooled color?

Where did you get your information?

You can search the forums. There are IMX174 mono analysis and I have IMX178MM which is way better with amp glow and even that isn't as clean as Atik 314L+ with ICX285 CCD (where as IMX178 has bit above 1e read noise at best, while Atik 314L+ around 4e).

Cooled Sony CMOS based cameras are totally different than CCD and it's actually suitable with them to capture many short exposed frames than few long exposed. And in general 0.5-1 year for CMOS sensors is a lot, IMX174 is already "old" or even "to old", and as color is already have been rekt by IMX224 ;)

So I take it then that the asi174mc color cooled is not a suitable camera for dso work?

You may use it but it won't be the most optimal camera for the job. Depends how good equipment you want to have and how much you want to pay. I used Atik 314L+ mono which is one of very good mono cameras at a reasonable price and still for typical DS long exposure imaging there isn't anything better at lower prices. Some of the new cooled ZWO cameras can be used for specific DS imaging but they are more tricky to use due to their limitations.

And I would rather pick mono to get most of it. Color cameras - either a DSLR or get QHY8L or alike with big APS-C colour sensor (for pure DS imaging). If you want multi-purpose color then ASI224 would be closest to that role (but still a challenge).
