Blank screen in Sharpcap using ZWO ASI 224

I have just managed to start using my new ZWO 224 and no problems encountered with imaging the moon or planets. Tried to image the Andromada galaxy and turned the gain up to maximum as suggested with Exposure down. Got the image in view and tried to focus, when I the try to turn down the gain to reduce the noice my screen goes blank and I loose the image. Another thing I noticed is there seems to be a significant latency in getting the image back when making adjustments, is this normal. I know it all depends on frame rates and gain exposure but would apreciate some views on this. I watched a imaging video on astronomy shed and it demonstrated turning the gain up to 100% at the start in order to catch object, this was with a Phillips NC 900 camera so this may be my problem in that it's not apropriate with a ZWO224.

for dark dso imaging, you always need long exposure more than 1s

Yes I have tried longer exposures but still nothing
