Doubts ZWO ASI178MC

Hello, I am interested in this ccd for planetary and guided with a modified finder 50mm opening like the one I show below, believe that it is feasible to guide such a small opening and this color ccd less sensitive than a monochrome or will I need more openness to compensate for the decrease in sensitivity to be colored .

What is the quantum efficiency for each color or in general of this ccd, because not find it anywhere , just meeting the sensitivity of the green respect to red and blue but nothing of the quantum efficiency of the sensor for each color or for all sensor

It's a CMOS not a CCD, but still it works "normally". It can be used as a guider and for planetary imaging. For most guiding setups should be ok. If you want the best color performance then ASI224 is bit better than color IMX178.

Excellent, thanks for the reply and advice , apparently without problems Podre guide finder opening 50 mm despite being a cmos color . Regarding the asi224 is not a configuration that I like my short for planetary optical tube ( 200/1000 ) so I chose the asi178

I'm new to this forum and still trying to work out which camera to get as a starter so my question is would the 178 colour camera work well for guiding through a 80x400 guidescope? and for planetary and some dso imaging through a 10" F4 Newtonian?

Or am I better going for something that will perform best as a guide camera - if so what would people suggest?

It will work easily with the guidescope. ASI224MC as a color could be slightly better, while ASI178MM or ASI290MM could be bit better as a mono camera.

Hi Rod

I have the 178MC and can't fault it.

I use it for Guiding, Planetary and some DSO. You have to mange your expectations...for guiding and planetary it's great. For DSO it works well, but you will not get the same results as you would for a £1100+ camera. I have the 1600MC with Hyperstar lens at F2 on a C11, or F10 from the back of the C11. The results are far better than the 178MC, but the 178MC is a 3rd of the price.

The way I see it...Start with the 178 or 224. It will satisfy your needs for now. If, at a later stage, you want more, then either of these will still be valuable as guide and planetary.

The main use is guiding and planetary and if is great at that I'm happy as that is my main need for the camera.

I currently use a Canon 70D for deep sky and using a smaller sensor for small DSO's was more curiosity and learning than anything else - if it seems a way I might go then I'd certainly look at something more suitable.
