ASI174MC Cool Camera and Horizontal Banding Artifacts

Hello,

Attached is an image I took a while back of the Horsehead Nebula that demonstrates the banding artifacts that seems to be inherent in the Sony IMX174 chip found in the ZWO ASI174MC Cool camera. I happen to like this camera on the basis of its characteristics, pixel size, sensitivity, full well capacity, etc. but I do want to deal with this problem. Short of blurring these images, has anyone effectively dealt with this problem though, say a high end image processing app such as PixInsight, and if so can they please direct me in the right direction. Also, does the monochrome version of the Sony IMX174 chip produce the same artifacts?

Horizontal banding - a random noise - is present in those sensors. Autostakker2 has banding removal features which may help.

Thank you, but how will a stacking program that accepts video instead of image files, and is geared towards planetary imaging help with deep sky still image issues?

AS!2 did some great job to remove these artifacts

you can try

just drag the file to AS!2 and stack in surface mode

don't forget to enable "Image Calibration"-"row noise correction"

I have the monochrome version of the ASI174 (uncooled) and it shows similar bands of noise. I've found that it depends upon the kind of subject you image as to whether post processing software can remove these artifacts. There are a number of image processing programs that have banding removal features, but in my hands none of them will work 100% of the time or perfectly.
