ASI 178MC for aerial videos

Hi,

We are trying to use a ASI 178MC to record aerial videos (camera is installed in an aircraft). We tried to use it as a Directshow camera and record videos using codecs like wmv or mp4 codecs in order to reduce size comparing to raw videos using firecapture or similar software. But most software doesn't recognise it or crash when selecting it. VLC crashes. VirtualDub refuses to capture indicating that frame rate output from the camera is not regular.

USB3camera (installed with ASI driver) can record compressed WMV video, but the result is strange (videos are too slow or too fast, and indicates a lot of dropped frames).

What software do you recommend to use for that (recording videos with 178MC camera with a "classic" compression like mp4).

It's a custom camera and may not support standard consumer interfaces.

I just purchased a 178mc for astronomical use. I had a lot of trouble under Windows 10 with dropped frames last night.

At the higher resolutions, 3/4 frames were dropped, at the lower resolutions 1/4 frames was dropped. I was getting ~30-60 f/s quoted in the software. It was as if the computer thought the usb3.0 port was a 2.0 port. I would appreciate any help at getting the frame rate up and dropped frames down.

You could try lowering usb bandwidth setting.

What software, exposure ?

ampcap is the most stable software but soft compress codec is very slow

that's why it's fast or slow sometimes

usually this is because CPU is not fast enough to debyer the raw data

or harddisk is not fast enough to capture the data

you can try preview or capture in raw8 data
