Canot connect x8 ZWO EFW

I am using Windows 7, APT and ASCOM 6.2 and have successfully downloaded the relevant drivers and connected the ZWO ASI1600MM-Cool camera which seems to work OK with APT.

However, the ZWO EFW is connected to the camera using the lead supplied and I downloaded the ASCOM EFW driver supplied but using APT I cannot get a connection with the EFW. Looking at the laptop the EFW driver seems to be there OK but the EFW does not show under Devices, the 1600 does.

Any thoughts / advice please, thank you Graham

Still not working but looking into the programs the ZWO EFW ASCOM Dribver 1.0.0.6 is there but on attempting to connect in APT it says "No EFW detected"

UPDATE

Summary of the set-up:

1. The ASI1600mm_cool is directly connected to a USB3.00 port and seems to work OK with APT.

2. I have installed the ZWO EFW driver v1.0.0.6 and using the short lead(s) provided connected the EFW directly to both of the USB 2.00 camera port. On trying to connect the EFW in APT it gives the reply "No EFW detected"; both ports fail.

3. However, I have now successfully managed to connect the EFW to APT by using a the very long cable supplied direct between the EFW and PC but comes up with a notice of ZWO Filter Wheel Set-up v6.0.0.6 (see Image) I have no ideas where this has come from.

I guess this confirms the EFW works but for whatever reason not when connected directly to the camera. Please can anybody (ZWO) suggest how I can get this working using the direct camera to EFW connection.

seems the EFW works good

did you try both USB2.0 port on camera body?

can you hear some sound when plugin the EFW?

you can try to connect your USB mouse or keyboard to test the hub on the camerea

Hi Sam. Yes I have tried both USB 2.0 ports on the camera without success.

As you have suggested, I plugged-in a mouse which lights up using both ports and I presume indicates they're both working?

I subsequently retried the EFW again and still no connection - when I try to connect a choice of two ZWO drivers comes up and I have tried both without success. What next?

PS here's the message obtained when installing the driver. As previously mentioned, this v1.0.0.6 is different to the one that does work when connected directly v6.0.0.6. Is v1.0.0.6 correct?

PPS I have also tried Sequence Generator Pro with the same outcome: No EFW detected

In addition to the last post I have again today tried reinstalling the EFW driver and again the EFW works OK when connected directly to the computer but using the short connection between the camera and EFW I first get the box ASCOM Filter Wheel Chooser then going to the dropdown box and choosing either ZWO Filter Wheel (1) or (2) I get "No EFW Detected".

As previously indicated the camera's USB 2.00 ports both do seem to be working and I can (I think) tell that when I plug in the short camera to EFW cable that there is a slight noise / movement as suggested - which I presume means there is a connection?

I would appreciate any further help in resolving this problem please.

Sam, further to the above, I had the brainwave that perhaps the USB traffic setting could be the problem but I have just tried different settings and still get "No EFW detected"

I have now been trying everything for over a week to get this working without success and would appreciate ZWOs help in resolving the problem in a more timely manner please.

Unfortunately it does not work with either of the short cables or the long cable.

As a matter of interest, does the camera need to be powered for the EFW connection to work - I have tried with and without unsuccessfully.

As previously noted, when it does connect directly a ZWO / ASCOM Filter Wheel Setup v6.0.0.6 opens up. Where does this live on the computer, I cannot see it under device drivers or ASCOM.

Any other ideas pleased?

that's wired, our EFW is a HID device just like keyboard or mouse

you should hear some sound when plugin it in or out

device manger will refresh too

the camera don't need to be powered for EFW connection to work

can you try like this:

use the usb2.0 cable connect the camera

and then try EFW connect to the hub

I have the camera hub connected to the EFW and the camera connected to the USB3.0 on my computer and it is this that gives me "No EFW detected" - so what's different?

Byre the way, as an aside, there is a debate on Star gazers Lounge - many people suggest that the camera & therefore the USB2.0 hubs need to be powered for the hubs and thus EFW to work. I belive you've said this is not the case and it is not a powered hub? I have tried both and it still does not work.

OK I see what you mean Sam and have now connected the long USB 2.0 cable to the camera + with the short camera to EFW cable and the EFW now works!

This seems to me good and bad news:

1. It confirms the camera - EFW link is working but...

2. It does not work with the USB 3.0 and, if I have to use USB 2.0 it will not operate at the same bit value and frame speed?

So, having confirmed the USB 2.0 link works how can I get the USB 3.0 working now? Would a higher quality USB 3.0 help? If so will it's length matter - in the end I need to run a 5m cable and already have a repeater - is it better to use a 5m high quality cable or a short quality cable and the repeater?

I should point out that the USB 3.0 cable has always been plugged into a working USB 3.0 port which has always worked OK and in this instance worked OK with the camera but not the EFW.

I suspect this is a problem from your USB3.0 host

seems your USB3.0 host can only work under USB3.0 mode or USB2.0 mode

but most USB3.0 host can work in both mode

you can try on another machine have USB3.0 port

Thank you Sam but I do not believe this is the case.

As noted in my original post, I am using a modern well specified computer.

I have previously used a number of different USB 2.00 items on the this port without a problem, including my DSLR camera + USB 2.00 cable for astroimaging and, as demonstrated, this 1600+EFW camera does work using the USB 2.0 cable. Using other USB 3.0 items the port also works OK without any problems.

It is only the ZWO 1600+EFW that does not work properly.

I can therefore only conclude that either this camera has problems with certain ports, for whatever reason? Or the USB 3.00 cable may not of sufficient quality.

I will continue to look into this problem and would appreciate any further help but this is the second ZWO camera I have purchased (previously a ZWO 120MC) and have been disappointed to have connection / USB problems with both.

The camera connect through USB3.0 but the hub connect through USB2.0

this means your USB3.0 need to support USB3.0 and USB2.0 at the same time

I only know some android phone platform do like this, it can only support USB2.0 or USB3.0

but not at the same time

I am using a modern, high-specification computer which works with everything else I have on USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports but not for the second time (also have a ASI120MC which had a connection problem but OK now) a ZWO camera, which will not work as advertised with my computer; the camera advertised specified nothing other than USB 3.0 computer ability.

What do you suggest I do now then please?

can you check the USB3.0 host chip on your laptop?

do one snapshot of your device manager when expand the USB categary

it's not popular, intel USB3.0 host controller is the most popular
