This depends on what you need to achieve and can also be subjective. I don't have a colour ASI camera, but my understanding is that Raw8 and Raw16 are greyscale formats. Having said that, if I'm wrong about this, the following will still apply: Raw16 has higher image fidelity than Raw8. Simply put Raw16 stores a significantly higher range of colours compared to Raw8. This comes at a cost of image size. Typically, the increase in fidelity is beyond human perception and, especially considering greyscale, beyond the capability of most display devices. End result, they look the same to the human eye. Best approach is for you to take test shots of same subjects using Raw8 and Raw16 and compare the output. Just my 2 pence...

If you are using SharpCap, you don't need to use the DirectShow driver as it is able to interface with your camera using the native drivers. The DirectShow driver is only required for applications that have been built to operate with cameras using DirectShow.
