ASI178MC problem : question for Sam

Hello Sam,

i have a problem with my ASI178MC.

I have something on the IRCut glass of the camera that brings some dots on the picture. Here is a photo of the problem :

It is the dots that are on a line which goes on the entire picture, from left to right (i have checked this).

The dots are always at the same place, whatever is the focus and the camera orientation. The dots are on the IRCut glass or on the sensor.

I did not pay attention when i used camera for the Moon but as i take pictures of Jupiter, i used some barlows and the problem was clearly visible.

If i don't use a barlow, the dots are here too.

It's a real problem.

Can you explain me what it is ? Must i send my camera to my reseller (Optique Unterlinden) ?

I am not sure what is it, but I don't think image Jupiter would be a problem as jupiter is so small

and there is a very clean large place on sensor for imaging jupiter

for moon, you can take one flat

I don't recommend you open the camera for cleanning

For Jupiter, i can manage it but for the Moon, it's too bad to have to make a flat.

Do you think it's a default on the sensor or on the IRCut glass ?

For sure, i won't remove the IRCut glass but do you think it's a good enough reason to send the camera back to Optique Unterlinden in order to change it or repair it ?

I worry about this problem, especially because i plan to buy a mono version of this camera and i don't want to have this problem twice.

Depending of your response, i will send the camera or not to Optique Unterlinden. If i send it to them, do you think it will be necessary for you to send a mail to Optique Unterlinden to explain them the problem. I mean, i can't be the cause of the problem because of the very specific position and number of dots - it's a build problem of the camera.

I hope you will do your best to help me to solve the problem. I am not really enthusiastic to make a flat for Moon imaging, really.

I suppose the dirty is on sensor, I am not sure OU can clean it for it

but you can try to contact and ask

Well, i don't think Optique Unterlinden will be able to clean the sensor.

I think the problem is a build problem and it was possible to use guaranty because one dust on the sensor, ok, but several dusts on a line is clearly for me a build problem and the camera should be changed.

I must be old school.

So i suppose i will have to manage this problem by myself. I am a bit disappointed.

you can clean it by yourself if your dealer won't do it for you
