thinking of buying the zw colour cooled camera for hyperstar imaging.

Ive never used a cooled camera before and have some questions.

I need a portable battery. is this one ok?

if so how long should i expect it to last?

what happens is the battery dies? can it still run off the laptop power like my zwo i120?

can the camera have the cooled mode disabled to preserve power?

the camera don't need extra power to work

but the cooler does

12V 4A battery is good, light weight and portable

you just need 0.5A to cool the camera to 30 degree below ambient

that means your battery can work 4A/0.5A=8 hours if you don't set one very low target temperature

Thank you for you reply. So if I do set it for the lowest temperature, can you tell me roughly how long it will run for in that battery? if it can't function at all at the temperature , what else do I need to buy in order to make it do so?

we don't suggest do that, because the temperature curve shows that at diminishing marginal effect. 50% power for cooling is enough when you using battery and need to save power.

Whoa! I sent you an email several months ago about the ASI1600MM-Cool camera. My question was, "does the camera cool to a point below ambient" or "does it actually cool to a specific temperature - as in -20c. You said in your answer, the latter. I also called Highpoint Scientific (where I purchased my camera) and asked them the same question. They confirmed your reply. They went on to say that this makes it possible to take a DARK LIBRARY. Now, in reading your reply to an different question - your answer reports that the camera cools to a "dialed in" temperature below ambient. This means taking a library of darks is worthless. What is the answer? My real question, is an accurate dark library possible? Is this a true "setpoint" camera?

I have an ASI1600MC-C and you set you target temperature (such at 0C or -10C) in the configuration setting and the camera does a beautiful job regulating to that temperature.

Just as John said the ASI1600MM-C is set point cooled. Just be careful to not cool it too deeply. Watch the ambient temperature at start and do not set it more than 40C below that. I don't go past 35C less just to keep the TEC from working to hard. Usually that means a set point of -10C which it easily achieves and holds from a starting ambient of 25C.

I have a set of darks for -10 and -5 (-5 just for those very warm nights coming in July\August). :-)
