New Sony sensor - IMX428

It has relatively big pixels (4.5um), some binning support and other weird things. Could be handy in a camera ;)

this 3rd generation of global shutter sensor is very expensive

and usually the performance cannot compare rolling shutter

BTW. Sony released IMX287 - 6.9um 0,4mpix sensor. Will be in Point Grey cameras soon. Kind of a planetary camera for long f-ratio telescopes.

I think sony's rolling shutter sensor is still better than global shutter sensor

I find the IMX428 the most attractive chip for future mono CMOS cameras.

This should be a direct replacement for the well-known (super performing) CCD chip ICX694 that is a killer for narrow-band imaging (but it has 5e- readout noise) while the improved 3rd generation of pregious global shutter shall have about 2.5e-. That would be significant improvement over ICX694. Also, I like the 3 format much better than 5 of ICX694, but that's the minor thing.

Sure, it would be an expensive chip (even the IMX428 variant of IMX420), but what can be done about it? I want the best and am willing to pay some extra $$$ for it :)

edit: the only concern is the amp-glow issue common to all SONY chips - provided it is manageable and the chip can be reasonably cooled (speaking about issues of IMX249) it would be a really great option...

Sony did release few global shutter sensors recently, even with 9um pixels.

IMX287 could be handy for very slow planetary telescopes and OAG guiding. 9.0um IMX426/433 and 425/432 would be a more extreme version of that. Both could also be used in EAA/live observations.

They shouldn't be expensive too. IMX287 is quite cheap in PGR Blackfly S camera.

Sean: please keep us updated with any findings on the IMX428 opportunity... I'd like to pair it with my portable Newtonian Astrograph (see here) that I'd like to use for mainly narrow-band imaging (as for color imaging I already have the best ever ASI094MC Pro )

Sean: thanks for the information, but that was expected, that the price would be very high at the moment... but what about "performance" ??? sure that the best chips for camera makers are those with reasonable good performance and very low cost (so as you sell lot of them with reasonably high profit), but having the option for those who want to spend more for hopefully better performance.... ? It looks like you would have to pay a lot even for the sample chip in order to evaluate it, am I right? I am just curious...

BTW how does it compare (with the price) to the ICX694? :-)
