Second test of ZWO ASI 385 on Moon

Hi all,

Very bad seeing conditions but I want to try ASI 385 on Moon. So please, don't care

about the resolution, I know it's not a wonderful image.

Here I would like to emphasis the difference between field of view between ASI 384 and ASI 224.

Both have clear window and when using infra-red filter (Ir-pass) both can be used as

monochrome camera. Of course, the Bayer matrix remains visible (see crop picure) but it's

possible to reduce it to the minimum when adjusting properly White Balance (Wred and Wblue

parameters). Remember that to work at full resolution it's important to do not debayer

the images.

There's always a remain of Bayer matrix, so processing is more difficult than classical

monochrome images. It's necessary to use blur filtering to be sure the software will not

be "attracted" by the matrix. Here I use old Registax 5.0 for processing.

Even with an Ir 742 Pro filter, high frame rate and manual sort out, I only keep 834

raw images from a 10700 images capture. So Less than 10%, very poor result !

Gain = 363.

Frame rate : 123 fps

Registration with Registax 5.0.

Hi all, ;)

Weather is very bad and impossible to go on test imaging with ASI 385.

So I decide to post this Janssen image taken last 7th november. This picture

was "near the edge of trashbin". It's a medium resolution image with a 300 mm

telescope.

As for Clavius image, I use the Ir 742 Pro filter. Manual sort out of rw images, I only

keep less than 10% of images.

SETUP :

ZWO ASI 385 + Ir 742 Pro filter + Barlow 3x

Near 1500 raw images remaining (16000 image capture)

Exposure = 2,3 ms

Gain = 304.

Frame rate : 123 fps

Visual sort out.

Registration with Registax 5.0.

Post-processing with Iris + Photoshop.

Final image 80% :

What is this test for, close ups of the moon?

I don't have larger scope and i just bought this camera, so what i can use this camera for?

If i use ZWO ADC do i need an IR-cut filter to shoot the moon and planets?

Yes. It's a test with an Infrared pass filter. In this case the camera is used as a monochrome camera.

Lot of funny things !

- Planetary color imaging with an Ir/UV Cut filter

- Lunar color imaging with an Ir/UV Cut filter. With enhanced color saturation it's interesting

to view the different geological areas.

- Planetary monochrome imaging using an Ir-pass filter like IR 742 PRO. Usefull in bad

seeing conditions.

- bright DSO imaging with short exposures (250 milliseconds to few seconds) as planetary

nebula and globular clusters. No need of filter if you want the maximum light flux. If you

want only true RGB colors, use an Ir/UV Cut filter.

- Bright comets.

If i use ZWO ADC do i need an IR-cut filter to shoot the moon and planets?

For pure color planetary imaging (RGB) I always use the Ir/UV Cut filter. Without it, the

color balance is awful !

Now the type of that ir-uv cut should be a specific one for this camera or any filter of different bands can be used here?

I have a filter that is called Baader Neodymium Moon&Skyglow, in the box of the filter it is written that it is IR cut, same it is written on the other filter: Baader Contrast Boost box, can i trust those 2 filters to be IR cut filters really if you have an idea about them?

I don't have LRGB, can't be use one of those filter to cut that IR? what about Ha filter? i do also have visual filters cheap such as UHC and OIII, what do you think about those?

Sorry i asked about those questions, because before i go and buy a new IR-cut filter i have to make sure that all of filters i already have aren't good to use or not a substitution to a real IR-cut filter maybe, and also if i will shoot targets in mono mood from the color camera, still i need IR-UV cut filter then?
