Asi174mm pro compared to asi1600mm pro

I have a 174mm pro which I use with a 720mm f4.8 scope for relatively short exposure galaxy imaging (5-10 minutes 30s or so subs) and occasional longer exposure images (30-60 minutes 2 minutes subs) stacked in sharpcap

I use mid level gain (150to 200) in sharpcap

My questions are:

Will the 1600mm pro give me better images using these type of exposures in terms of sensitivity or SNR of the image after processing?

Does either camera outperform the other in this setting in terms of photo metric linearity?

I’m unconcerned about the fov but rather the ability to get the best mono image for galaxy structural mapping with short exposures. On paper the 174 looks more sensitive (higher qe and bigger pixels) but also has double the read noise approx.

Hi there

It's never been compared under your conditions, I don't know what will happen. better or worse. But, 1600mm pro have much less amp-glow and read noise, it can support longer exposure times as well.

I rather thought that might be the case. I guess I'll eventually try one and see although I have to say the 174 chip is doing really rather well on its own account.

In general terms would you say that the 1600MM the best overall mono cmos sensor?

Its a real pity the 294 chip isn't made as a mono sensor with the high qe and low read noise but then Astronomy cameras are a tiny market for Sony I guess

Yes, 1600mm still the best mono camera overall, considering each aspect. I guess, you are right, Sony focus on big market, obviously, it's not us.
