Cooling and temperature issues with my ASI071MC-PRO

I have 5 ZWO camera including three cooled cameras. I have an ASI1600MM-C, an ASI1600MM-PRO and recently purchased an ASI071MC-PRO. The 1600MMs both show a temperature of about ambient with the power turned off and cool about the same with a delta of -45C for the -PRO and -42C for the -COOL.

However, My ASI071MC-PRO shows a base temperature with the power off (even with the 12V unplugged of 42-45C which is way hotter than ambient. It also only cools to about -30C delta from ambient, but that is actually more if you consider its starting temperature.

Do I have a bad temperature sensor in the camera? It should simple not be reading that hot with the camera off.

I tried turning off the anti-dew and it had no effect at all. Not surprised.

It seems to have so sort of internal set point when it is turned off at 45C. I have no idea why or how to turn it off. Also, the delta T is only about 25C from ambient. I have corresponded to other uses of this camera and they have MUCH better performance that I am getting.

I unplugged the 12V power and disconnected the ASCOM connection to the camera, but I could still see the temperture sensor. The camera started to cool down to ambient rapidly once I did this and within a few hours it was down to ambient. I connected the ASCOM connection and the camera immediately start to warm back up even with the 12V TEC power disconnected. I turned the camera off, but still connected by ASCOM and the temperature continued to rise. There is some source of internal heat that is not coming from the TEC. I corresponded to two other users on Cloudy Nights and they are seeing much more expected results. Under similar conditions, the can cool the camera to -5C with only about 30-40% power on the TEC. My guess is that the TEC is having to fight the internal source of heating. I contacted Woodland Hills camera and telescopes and they will be contacting ZWO on this camera also. I think I should be given a replacement camera.

Hi there

Turn off the anti-dew could solve this heat problem, but in the post you said it is no effort. Please check the Fan, if it is running well when cooling system is actived.

Hi Sean.

I am running AstroImager by CloudMakers and I was wondering if the Anti-dew system is always on or does it have to be turned by software. Their program doesn’t seem to have an on/off feature like ASICAP.

ASI071 is APS-C sensor and the power consumption is higher than 1600 or 183

so the delta temperature of the cooling system cannot reach as low as 1600 or 183

all our test result is based on 30C ambient, the delta T drops if the ambient is cooler than this

The ambient temperature in my home is around 23°C. I cannot get either my ASI071MC Pro or ASI1600MM-C to cool to -15C. I can get them to cool to about -13C and can't get it to go cooler at all. I'm using a 12v 5A power supply. Not sure how I can get to -15 or even -20.

The cooling degree of the TEC is limited when it is designed, so it is impossible to reduce the temperature without limit. Normally, this limit is 40 degrees Celsius below the ambient temperature. But the actual temperature difference would be less than 40 degrees, given the various factors such as ventilation, different heating from different sensors, and the efficiency of air cooling and so on.

So there's going to be a temperature range in our camera description, and the temperature difference is going to be normal in that range. For your camera, I think it is fine. If you want to get the lower temperature, you may need the external equipment to help it get a lower temperature.
