New Sony IMX490 sensor

Hello,

New IMX490 seems interesting but there is few informations about it.

It will be released on march 2019 and the sensor will cost 15000 yen.

Could you try to get informations on this sensor ?

It could interest me for my EAA system (Chad knows everything about it).

It's the great brother of IMX290.

So my only question is : do Sony plan a monochrome version of this sensor

as they do for the IMX290 ?

I know the pixel size is small but for my eaa system, I plan to use bin2 for the sensor, whatever it will be.

Now, I use ASI178MC sensor with bin2. Raspberry pi can't manage very high resolution pictures, considering I make realtime treatments with the raspberry.

So, 1500x1000 pixel is a good target for me. Imx490 with bin2 could be interesting.

I also consider imx183 with bin2 or bin3 or imx294 with bin2. In fact, I don't know what could be the best choice.

Hello ZWO,

i really hope you will be able to get an IMX490 sensor to test it. I am really interested with this sensor.

If you can get some and make cameras with it, i want to test this camera with my EAA system :

The system is not finished yet but it works great with a ASI178MC.

You can see i quick test video of the resut i get with my system here :

Everything is controled with a raspberry pi 3 b+. I wrote the capture software for the ASI178MC, using the ZWO SDK and i wrote the software to control the stepper motors of the altaz mount i built.

A new ASI490 could be really great for this system (using BIN2).

The body of the new ASI490 should be the same body as ASI178MC. It is important for me because with that kind of body, i can use my Canon FD 50mm. With the body used for bigger sensor (ASI294 for example), i can't use my lens.

Please, tell me about this sensor and future use with a camera. I want to test it.

ok, i will follow the news.

I have a specific need that won't match general need i guess. So i won't hope too much.

I think EAA can have a future but we should need big photosites with low noise and high gain. High framerate is not a priority at all.

What should be very helpful is a Canon FD to camera adapter. We can find very low price Canon FD lens but it is really hard to plug them on the cameras.

For example, i can use my Canon FD lens on ASI178 bodie but i can't use them on ASI294 body (for example). That's why i will never buy camera like ASI294 for my EAA system. I will have to search for camera which have the same body as ASI178MC.

Maybe a ASI490MC could be cool for my EAA system. I could use it with BIN2, that is to say i will have 6µm photosites (4.8 actually with my ASI178MC). With BIN2, i will have good but quite small resolution, which is perfect for the raspberry pi who makes acquisition and realtime treatment. Raspberry is not powerful enough to manage high resolution with realtime treatments.

So, every not too high cost industrial sensor will be welcome.

For sure you can!

There still have many Canon FD lens around and if you make an adaptor, someone will buy it.

You don't make astronomy camera to get rich don't you?

What is bad if the pixels too small?

IMX178 is quite good but bigger pixels would be better for my use. IMX490 seems to be better than IMX178 (sensibility, pixel size a bit higher).

IMX490 could be even a bit better than IMX290 with better resolution. I could use IMX490 with BIN1 AND BIN2 for my purpose, that is to say realtime sky survey with a stand alone system.

It is specific use.

I think IMX490 will be better than IMX178.

We have to wait for news and tests but IMX490 could be the new IMX224 with better resolution and less ampglow.
