EFW Mini not working

I received a brand new EFW Mini as a Christmas present and am struggling to get it to work:

Symptoms: when I ask it to select a filter it continually rotates and occasionally hunts back and forth a bit, but never stops on a particular filter. Re-calibrating from ASCOM makes no difference.

Configuration: ASCOM 6.4, Windows 7 32 bit, ZWO LRGB and Ha 1.25" screw-in filter set, ZWO ASI1600MM with no power supply, USB2 on old laptop which does not have USB3. I've tried connecting it both directly to the laptop and via the ASI1600 hub.

Has anyone else had similar problems with a new device and any suggestions on diagnosing/fixing?

Maybe there are some dusts on the wheel position sensor, could you clean it then try again?
