For the AWG16 wire we used, it is because we consider that the user may not only use it to power the camera, but may also use it to power other devices, like mount. Beside that, Smaller AWG, less wire heating will be less, strength will be higher, etc.
For your case, if you only use it to power the camera, I think you should promise the voltage on the camera port is above 11V at least, and the current should have 3A。If you can fix this 2 factors, it should be fine. Beside, also do not foget the safe. The diameter of the wire is closely related to the heat.
