How to connect the new Sky-Watcher EQ6-R Pro to ASIAIR?

a few people are having issues with stellarium and the developer is saying that the problem lies in something to do with ascom client but doesn’t quite know what. This had me thinking it’s maybe something to do with the newer chipset and software. Anyone know if this would have an effect on ascom client ?

I downloaded and installed that image (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1MLd0TO7yzPsiqIzVpUVn743DaEnKzox9/view?usp=sharing) and udated the firmware after that. Seems to run fine, but I don't see an EQ6 or anything like it, and none of the Skywatcher mounts work with the USB connection work. So, no improvement ...

What am I missing? Thx!

franco - yup. That mount didn't work either. Well - it works with an EQMod cable, but not with USB ....

If you connect your mount to a computer, do you see the USB connection?

I took the SD card out and put it back in, and now it works on the usb also. Go figure, and thanks for everyone’s help!

I would recommend not removing the SD card constantly. The Raspberry Pi microSD connector is not the push-push kind that are designed for multiple insertions. You may still have problems when temperatures dip lower.

Access the storage data through the Raspberry PI's network Samba server. Or even better, don't use the SD card except for firmware. Get a USB memory stick instead.

Only to change the image, yes. But interesting anyways - how do I access the Samba Server - port 80 for the ASIAir's IP? Is there any login/passwork default?

I just replaced the slowish USB stick that came with the unit with a fast 1TB SSD drive that's connected with a short cable, Easier to remove, no stress on the AIRs USB ports either, and I can do all the image work off it 🙂

If you are on a Windows PC, open a file explorer window and type \asiair (should be two backslashes, not one) in the search field. You should connect. No password needed.

I am buying a new Eq6 R Pro and own an ASIAIR Plus. I still need to do this? Load a new ASIAIR image or is just updated with the new firmware ? By the way I need any special cable to connect them? I already have an EQmode cable for my AZGTI. IS the same cable ?

trumperl Depends on the mount. The EQMod cable should work either way, but if you want to use the usb connection and this is the newest EQ6R build then you probably have to get the new image. Easily done though.

HEX HEX And the new image works with AZGTI also or I need to use different images depending the mount. I don't understand why ZWO can't include the new EQ6-R Pro model like another mount in their standard firmware or with a new update...

The plus has the USB kernel module in the base image, so it's just plug and play with the latest EQ6 with built in USB. Just use the included USB cable and set the driver to EQMod @ 115200 baud.

Any plans on allowing the Sky Watcher EQ6-Ri Pro or Dongle to the ASI Air/ASI Air Pro/ASI Air Mini and eliminate the cable and opening up a usb port?

This would be a huge upgrade!

Why it would be huge upgrade? I don't resist if reasons are good, but keeping in mind usually restricted resources in software development, I can see many much much more important features than replacing a two feet long USB-cable....

Okay, call me stupid. I am a retired Avionics Technician from the Navy so I can't be all that stupid. I just bought a brand new EQ6-R Pro. I tried linking the mount to ASIair mini with a USB cable but, no surprise, it didn't work. I tried the link in your post but I just get a message that I can't download anything. Could you please walk me through what to do as though you are talking to a moron? I will understand with plain messaging, but you can't assume that I know anything. I also tried a "fix" from another poster that said select "Skywatcher AZ-GTI/synscan WIFI", connect with the USB cable and set baud rate to 11520 The ASIair recognized the mount and responded to mount control and GOTO but I can't verify proper movement or tracking since I am doing all of this setup in my den. Please help!!

I bought an EQ6R Pro mount in May 2024 to use with my ASIAIR Pro. Today was the first time i tried to connect it and am having the exact same issue. That link above in this thread no longer links to anything.

Doesnt ZWO support this issue anymore? Meaning the only way to get an ASIAIR Pro to talk to an EQ6R Pro is to now buy the EQMod/EqDir cable?

In addition, my other EQ6R Pro mount has a Hand Controller port that no longer works (thanks to this very issue - long story), which would render an EQMod cable useless as it uses that port, and so USB 'needs' to be supported.. this beggars belief!

ZWO support, please help.

EDIT: Emailed Support and I was kindly sent an email with the link to the new ASIAir Pro OS file & instructions. Suggest doing the same if youre in the same boat. Thanks Simon @ ZWO Support.

I had the same issue when I first got the EQ6. I called Sky-Watcher and they told me to get an EQMod cable from Amazon. I did and have not had an issue in the past 2 years.

Honestly, the preferred option is to just buy the EQMod cable. Bought one from Amazon and i actually prefer it to the USB cable now, as it has a positive CLICK into place unlike the USB cable which has always felt like it was about to fall out, or easily be knocked out.
