I am new to Astrophotography, still setting up and playing with my gear but I am ready to go out and try my first shoot. Question, how does my gear know the GPS location (in the field) and does it actually matter, assuming I am polar aligned and using a GEM? My gear is an iPad Mini running ASIAir software (no cellular), connected to an ASIAir Pro and AVX mount. The other gear doesn't really matter for the purposes of the question but it would seem there are 3 devices that have the option of storing GPS data, but none of them can get them in the field (with no WiFi around).
Do I turn on my phones WiFi hotspot and let the iPad Mini get GPS coordinates from it, then disconnect and assume it stays in the OS and will transfer to ASIAir and the ASIAir Pro and AVX mount? Do I just jot down the location from my phone and manually set it in ASIAir (or the mount), or BOTH?! Do I even need it actually? Just confused about this part since all of this stuff shows GPS coordinates but none of the tutorials seem to cover it? Also, if I do need to set the GPS coordinates, in which device(s) or software?
Thank you in advance...
