After a perfect plate solve on the first target of the night, plate solve refused to solve on three or four different targets. Changing the exposure didn't help. Going back to the mount Home position and back with goto didn't help. Each time it found between 30 and 1000 Stars.
What is the FOV?
Dont know in arc secs, I guess I could look it up, its a C-11 at 2800mm, so fairly narrow, but if it detects that many stars it should surely know what they are and plate solve

Not if the database does not include those dim stars -- which is true for the case for your focal length, unless you are using at least an APS-C sized sensor (on a second or third generation ASIAIR), or a full frame camera in the case of the first generation ASIAIR (which has an even smaller database).
