Here is a funny story, Huib...
When I was an undergrad, I had an NSF fellowship in my 3rd and 4th year Summers to work under Sandy Weinreb at NRAO Green Bank (you probably have met Sandy too, he is the one who found the 1.667 GHz OH radical in interstellar space using his Autocorrelation Receiver that has since been his fame).
There were a dozen of us undergrads and grad summer interns, all but two of us were Astronomy students (the other EE was a Swede who worked for John Finlay, who you may also have known).
Anyhow, by the time we were there in 1968, the 40 foot Transit Scope that Frank Drake used in Project Ozma was in disrepair and used only by nesting birds :-).
So a bunch of us got permission to resurrect it. The astronomy students got the job of cleaning the bird nests and the abandoned control room. I took on the task to build a JFET preamp (hey, this was in 1968) and a helix feed antenna. We then "borrowed" some unused (vacuum tube) backends and chart recorders from the store room. We had a lot of fun. As a transit instument, we simply let the radio source drift by, being able to only set the declination. We pretended to look for Deuterium at 327 MHz :-) :-).
Anyway, that was a couple of "lifetimes" ago. I never back in my NRAO days envisioned being ever connected to SETI, but NASA approached us at Stanford in the late 1970s to come up with a multi-channel spectrum analyser.
Recently, I visited the NRAO web site, and it looks like they have permanently resurrected the 40 foot as a "student" telescope, and probably with real instrumentation, instead of what we were able to cobble up in our spare time that summer.
BTW, I did shoot an email to the ZWO person (and also cc'd a couple other "influential" people at ZWO). So you should be getting the proper attention to your problem.
