Polar Alignment

I am going crazy with polar alignment at times. I get a situation where the circle is for instance on one side of center and the AZ adjustment arrow next to the number I am off wants me to move it even more that way. Similar with the Alt adjustment. The arrow will point in the same direction that the circle is already off. What is one supposed to believe?

johnpd ignore the circles. Adjust the azimuth until the az error is zero or nearly zero, then do the same for alt.

johnpd if the error is nearly zero in both az and alt, the circle will be in the middle.

Sorry, the answer is yes. If the error gets worse just reverse the direction of the adjustment.
