charding I am getting washed out images and bloated stars
There are at least three potential things that can cause that. (1) you are not in focus, (2) there is excessive gain, or (3) the bias is set too low (if you are using ASIAIR, you have no control of that, however).
Unfortunately, the ASI220 has very low dynamic range (notice that it does not use a Sony sensor); but you probably saw that specs before purchasing it. This is where you need to be careful with exposure time and gain, or you will get the "washed out" appearance. From your description, your exposure value could have been too high for this camera.
In case you are using ASIAIR v2.0, you can partially work around the third problem by turning on dark guide frames in the Guide settings window. (It takes about 90 seconds for ASIAIR to create the dark frames -- make sure no light reaches the sensor while collecting the dark frames.)
The pixels of the ASI220 is also rather large. So make sure that you also have Bin2 guiding turned off if you are using ASIAIR. Even at Bin1 (4 µm pixels), I wouldn't use it on guide scopes that have short focal lengths.
