How to set up remote access to ASIAIR via VPN Server

This post is about how to access the ASIAIR Plus or Pro when you're NOT at home connected to your home network. Please look at the diagram carefully.

So recently I had a go at setting up a VPN Server on the travel router I have connected to the ASIAIR Plus (32GB) in order to connect to the ASIAIR remotely.

I managed to get it to work by setting up an OpenVPN Server on my travel router (GL.iNet MT-3000) and forwarding the required OpenVPN Server ports from my home router to the travel router.

I couldn't get Wireguard to work for some reason.

Corsair I made it work using Tailscale. No port forwarding required. Just a Pc with tailscale open (or a raspberry pi if you have one) on the same local wifi where Asiair is connected.

I’m currently fighting with the GL Inet router because my lack of net’s knowledge.

I tried the same scheme that you have BUT i’m trying to connect using a 4G connection. The idea is to have my rig at the roof (11th floor) and control it from home (1st floor) so I believe I need a 4G/5G router.

The idea is to use my MAC Book (runs Asiair app with no problems) connected to the GL Inet GL-XE300 (that uses a sim card for data). I tried but I failed, probably because I’m not sure what I’m doing. I tried Wireguard but failed. Using openVPN I can't see the minirouter from home but not the Asiair. Maybe because using a SIM card I have not a static public IP?

Could you help me?

killerciao Ah. Yes, Tailscale is also available on the GL.iNET MT-3000 travel router so I don't think I would need to be running a PC. That is another option of VPN. https://docs.gl-inet.com/router/en/4/interface_guide/tailscale/

I'll have to give it a go with my setup (as pictured) to see if I need to port forward from my main router to the travel router.

I wouldn't need to port forward if:

I had my ASIAIR directly connected to my Home router (and ran the VPN server on the Home router); or
If the GL.iNet router was the main router.

As it stands, with my current setup, I need to port forward from the Home router to the travel router in order for the VPN Server running on the travel router to connect to a remote device running the OpenVPN client app and allow connection to the ASIAIR via the ASIAIR App running on the remote device.

Do you know if it can be done with a router with a 4G LTE SIM card? team up on the field, and connect from somewhere else? Is there any tutorial to do this?

avpinedo apologies for late reply to this (and if you've sorted it already).

If the router with the 4G LTE SIM card in it supports running a VPN - then yes. Just enable and configure the VPN on the 4G Router.

If the 4G Router doesn't have support running a VPN then you would need to get separate travel router that does and use the method I showed in my original post.
