Dunno if the ones that are failing are bricked after the update fails, but there is a way to avoid the Update Now popup. You close (dismiss from recent apps), reopen the app, and then a fraction of a second after it connects click on the function you need.. Stargazing, Solar, Lunar.. etc.. It'll open that function, at the same time the Update Now popup appears, and cover it up. Can then operate normally until you return to the main screen, where you'll get stuck.
And I agree. Don't make updates mandatory, for reasons like this. Also someone said it wasn't finding the sun, so I was going to hold off until that was confirmed fixed.
