For those still waiting for ZWO to deliver on any of the much requested features like remote control, automation, integration with other astronomy apps like Stellarium, mosaic mode, support for equatorial mount and so on, it's a very long list, there is a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel, through the work done by an open source group of developers.
This is still in the very early stages and in development mode, but it is possible to control the S50 through an ASCOM driver from other apps like Stellarium and bypass the SeeStar app entirely. This gives access to all the S50 features and opens the way to controlling the S50 directly from Stellarium, as well as programmatic access from any other application, the sky is the limit, pun intended.
I am trying this as we speak and I was able to issue go to commands and move the S50 with Stellarium, so this looks very promising. The solution uses an ASCOM Alpaca driver, which can interface to multiple S50s, both locally and remotely, and then act as a server to multiple app clients.
While the SeeStar app is not required, this is not a replacement for it, the two solutions complement each other and can coexist. You can still use the SeeStar app to monitor the S50, you can issue go to commands from both SeeStar and Stellarium alternatively and the telescope's current position is accurately displayed on both apps.
This solution seems to work pretty well and has the potential to deliver all the features we have been waiting for so long.
