  • Issue with ASI Fits view module in ASI Studio.

I have found ASIfitsview to be a very well done usefull app. However I have fouund a problem with the latest two versions of the app. Prior to these two versions I could double click a fits file and the ASIfits view file would open and display the fits file without having the ASIStudio open. The latest two versions now do not open the ASIfitsview module of ASIStudio by clicking on a .fits document.
I use the Mac OS with M series processors. and the latest version of the MacOS. I do not know if he change is caused by changes by Apple or Zwo. I now request ZWO also provide a stand alone version of the ASIfitsview app which would allow clicking on a fits document taken with my ZWO cameras to open the app and display the image for use.
I do not know if .fits files from other sources can be opened with ASIfitsview, But since all the Astro Cameras I own are from ZWO/asi there would be no problem if ASIfitsview were limited to only open images created by ASI cameras.

ZWO Support,

I thank you for responding to my issue with double clicking a .fits file to open and display the images taken with my ASIair. I was not aware of this feature in the Get Info app. However while the works perfectly on my. 2023 M2 Mac mini, It does not work with my M3 MacBook Pro 2024. The version of the MacOS I am using is the most current one on both of my Computers.
If you happen to see this issue in the future, please let me know.

Thank You.

aruckle I'm not sure if i understand correctly, so even you set the default open program to ASIFitsview, the fits file still can not be opened via double click on your M3 MacBook Pro, right?

I have MacBook PRO M1 running OS18 and same issue - AsiStudio is gray out in the list of available apps what you can associate as default for FITS files
No idea how to assign ASI FitsView as default opening app on Mac running latest OS?

TomasK AsiStudio is gray out in the list of available apps what you can associate as default for FITS files

When the window of avalable applications appears, did you select "All Applications" instead of "Recommended Applications" in the Enable Menu (the menu is just below the list of files)?

macos has always worked this way, to protect you from rogue and unreliable developers.

I have three Apple “M” series Mac’s, M1, M2, Mac mini’s select the fits view auto-open within ASI Studio as shown in your previous post above, my M3 is a PowerBook pro does not allow the secondary drop-down to select ASI fits view, from the ASI Studio tab. I also have a 2018 Intel Mac mini i9 that has OS Big Sur witch does not open fits view from within ASi Studio.

I have a new M4 on order that I hope will work properly.

If anyone has had this problem and found a way to get to work, please post the remedy.

I came across this post as I encountered the same problem.

The auto opening of FITS stopped working whenever they stopped shipping ASIFitsViewer as a separate application but bundled within the ASIStudio. You're not able to access this application directly from Finder.

          I found the following solution:

          1. Open Applications in Finder, locate ASIStudio, right click >> Show Package Contents, then locate the MacOS folder. Drag and drop this MacOS folder do your Favorites sidebar.
          2. Right click any FITS file, select "Get Info" and navigate to the "Open with" section.
          3. Select Other application then in the pop-up window click on the MacOS folder in your favorites sidebar.
          4. Select ASIFitsViewer
          5. Select open all similar files with this application
          6. You can remove the MacOS folder from your favorites bar now

Unfortunately, this does not work on a M1 - M4 Macs. It reports the application is damaged. (in the Package contents, under MacOS folder, if you right-click on AsiFitsViewer, it says Intel.
A well, I will try to find another fits viewer until this is solved....
