Glabella FWIW, for Jupiter I found the sweet spot in Manual mode is to set the gain at 5 (no more, no less) and and then tweak the shutter speed until you can see Jupiter's bands.
And generally I find that auto-focus is pretty worthless on planets. It's basically looking for sharp edges of pinpoints of light (stars). On planets it's too bright so when it goes out of focus, it makes a crisp out of focus circle around the object, and it decides that's sharper than the original blob. Instead I let it focus on the stars first, and then tweak focus manually when it's back pointed at the planet.
