Even before this update I found that it took quite a lot of rotations to calibrate the compass if the main unit stays level. It goes much faster if you move it around in different orientations (as you'd calibrate the compass on a smart phone), but the resultant calibration is useless if you do that. Just gotta keep it level and be patient with it.
FWIW, I still haven't seen any evidence to suggest that the compass calibration is necessary in either ALT/AZ or EQ deepsky modes.
It's mainly used when trying to find a rough starting point to locate sun or moon.
