The way I use the CAA at the moment is top connect the USB and the handset, but in ASIAIR I leave it disabled, so ASIAir will not rotate it automatically.
Then manually rotate watching the back of the camera to judge the orientation. I also put a black index mark on the CAA, and I put a piece of BluTak on the camera body in line with it, so I know where the initial position was and can return to that. Visually I can guess the position within about 10 degrees.
I still find the CAA useful to find guide stars (I use the ASI2600 DUO camera) by manually rotating and watching for a guide star zipping across the field of the guide sensor.
