New ASI120MM with possible fault

Hi,

I have just purchased an ASI120MM, the USB2 version but cannot get it to be recognised by my PC.

I am in contact with the supplier about this issue but require further information as to what is possibly the problem with the camera.

I already have an ASI224MC camera with is attached and working perfectly, so all ZWO software and drivers are already on my system.

When I attach the ASI120MM to my USB2 port it shows in Windows 10 Device Manager as 'Unknown Device' with 'code 28' see attached image Cam4.png:

Now if I click on the Device Propterties Details tab I can see the Device Instance Path & straight away I can see that the 'D.I.P' of the ASI120MM is incorrect, see image Cam5.png:

it is showing 'USB\VID_04B4&PID_8613\5&1B0F3F2&0&4'

and from my research the Vendor ID of 04B4 is for Cypress Semiconductors & the Product ID of 8613 is for Cypress USB Open Host Controller.

Surely the 'D.I.P' should be showing as: USB\VID_03C3&PID_120A\....... etc

The supplier has asked me to perform various tasks in a failed attempt to get the ASI120MM working, namely switching off my Anti-Virus software, which is Windows Defender, which I did and then ran the driver install, this did nothing, no changes.

I have tried all these steps on 9 different PCs up to now all with exactly the same outcome.

They then pointed me to the ZWO Firmware Update Tool, which sounded hopeful but alas did nothing because the ASI120MM had to first be recognised by Windows in order to be found by FWupdate.

See here where I have my 2 cameras connected ASI224MC & ASI120MM:

FWupdate only shows 1 device connected and that is my ASI224MC, the ASI120MM is not listed.

On top of this I have tried to manually update the driver for the ASI120MM in device manager by choosing:

Update Driver > Browse My Computer for Driver Software > Let me pick from a list...

I select 'Imaging Devices' from list then ZWO as manufacturer and finally ZWO ASI120MM Camera as the model & click OK, then I get this warning:

I click YES anyway and then the ASI120MM camera appears in the 'Imaging Devices' section in Device Manager but still is not functioning because looking at the 'Device Instance Path' it is still showing as:

USB\VID_04B4&PID_8613\5&1B0F3F2&0&4

I now try FWupdate again after unpugging my ASI224MC, so only the ASI120MM is connected via USB2 and I see this:

which shows that I do have a device connected but the drop down list is empty, once again showing that I am unable to flash the firmware.

All in all I have come to the conclusion that the camera is faulty and the reason for this is because the devices controller chip has not been installed with any firmware in the first place, hence why it is showing the chip suppliers details Cypress as the VID & PID.

Is there anyway to fix this camera or is it completely useless?

I will be pointing my supplier towards this thread, so I really need some full and technical answers to my dilemma in order for them to initiate a return RMA.

Hi Sam,

thanks for posting the bootloader and after some considerable messing around I was eventually able to flash the firmware on my ASI120MM and get the camera recognised by Windows but the camera is still not functioning correctly.

It is very, very slow fps.

Sometimes it will spring to life and get about 12fps but then drops right down to 0 for until I unplug it and plug it back in.

I have tried both firmware versions with the same result.

I have a totally unusable camera and I will need to contact my supplier.

I spoke too soon.

I just restarted my PC and attached the camera once more and again it is not recognised just 'unknown device'

I think the problem is because the storage IC on camera is broken and cannot keep the firmware

you need to send it back to us for repair if so

@tech@zwo#48641 Hi I have but they just sent me a how to recover westbridge advice and thats not the problem it doesn't gets to the part were the bootloader selection is and there are no bootloader options

Is there a way of you being able to push the firmware online because as it is there is no other way to update the drivers as there wizard do not see the camera connected for it to be able to upload
