Hi Vince,

Have you had any luck? We've only had a couple of clear nights and only for a few very short hours at that. so I have not had much luck testing. what I am finding is that things seem to somewhat random. I can stack and calibrate say without darks and I don't get this red cast. Howerver sometimes the red cast shows up if I use Flats. Very, very strange. So it is just luck if I'm able to get good calibration/stacking.

I just can't seem to isolate the root case to be able to fix it.

Hi Mark,

it would seem that the red cast comes in when I use dark frames. Having said that I still sometimes get a red cast without using the darks.

Like you the weather is not very cooperating so I am struggling to go out and image.

I will keep you posted when I find a cure but please let me know if you find one before me.

Hi Vince,

Will do. I am seeing some very erratic behavior when taking flats. I set my flat panel for a target of mean value in SGPro to 30,000 at appeoximatly 0.5 seconds exposure time. I see wild swings in the numbers from frame to frame of 15,000. typically the flats never go above my target of 30,000 but as low as 15,000. one frame by be say 29,000 and the very ext image might be 20,000 a swing of 9,000 and as far as I can tell the flat panel brightness remains the same.

The old camera held pretty steady when taking flats of only about a change of 50. I'm wondering if these wild swings in the Flats might be the issue. If I get time I want to lower the flat panel light intensity and increase the camera exposure time. I'm just wondering if taking fast flats is the issue.

Just thinking out loud.

Hi Mark,

Yes I do take flats and I have some issues there to. When I take flats with my Moravian CCD everything is perfect. However when I take flats with the ASI the problem start with the Red background.

I solve the bias issue by taking bias of 0.1 or 0.2 second. I found that answer somewhere on the net but I cannot remember where.

Hey Vince,

Did you get your issues resolved. I'm still not having any luck. Flats mean values are all over the place and this leaves dark round blotches, (some look like donuts and others look like dark irregular dark blotches), during calibration and stacking, as I mentioned before. I have this glow in the bottom of all of my images. when I rotate the camera the glow rotates with the camera so it appears to be something in the camera and not in my image train. and I'm still getting this deep red that I cannot completely eliminate during processing.

As Sam suggested to use the ASCOM driver, which I always had. At this point I'm pulling my hair out. when the weather does permit and I'm able to I am taking DSO images but I cannot get anything good. At this point I am just wasting valuable imaging time trying.

Since no one else appear to be having any of these issue, I must conclude I have a defective camera.

I reached out to the place where I purchased the camera to see if they have any idea on what's happening and/or what to try. I only had this upgrade since late November, so maybe I might be able to get it replaced.

I cannot use the flats just like you and I get a red cast instead of a green one.

Still trying to solve the problem. I will let you know if and when I solve my problem.

I would be very interested to hear what your supplier will do.

I am surprised that no one is commenting on these issues on this forum nor the manufacturer offering any suggestions.

Hi Vince,

Nice Images! Even with the camera issues. I have not been so lucky. The weather has not been good here in Ohio and I have not gotten out because of all the rain and snow. I do want to try your suggestion on the bias, using .1 or .2 seconds. Also I just saw something where someone suggested to take flats and target them for around 15,000 ADUs when using the ASI071 camera. That will be my next try. However I don;t know if that will take care of the glow I'm seeing but worth a try while I wait.

The place where I purchased the camera from has sent 2 requests to Sam at ZWO but they have not gotten any response back. From the images I sent and what I described they are thinking the camera is defective but their are wanting to see what Sam has to say. They were surprised that they have not gotten response to there request.

Hi Mark,

The bias of 0.1 or 0.2 second have resolved my bias issue.

The dark are also difficult as I believe there is some light leakages in the camera so that introduce some more problems. To resolved this issue I do the darks at night after I finished imaging.

For the flats I am still struggling with it. If i process the image using darks and bias I get a green cast on the image as it should be but the minute I used the flats the red cast starts.

My next step is to change the light source as it could be the one with a red cast. I cannot see it with the naked eye but I will try anything.

It is very strange that Sam is not answering the queries on this issue.

I will keep you inform of my tribulations.

Hi Vince - I've always taken my Darks at the end of the night when it is still dark so I don't think my issue has to do with light leakage. Sure seems to be pointing to something inside the camera.

Hi Sean - I am looking forward to getting this fixed. As an example, here are two images that show this glow down at the bottom of each image. When the camera is rotated the glow rotates with the camera. Also, notice the red cast in each image. Both of these images have been fully calibrated, stacked and processed in PixInsight. The calibrations were done using Flats, Darks, and Bias frames and taken on the same night as the images. The scope used is a ES102.

Both images are typical of what I've been getting with the new ASI071 Pro camera.

there is something in your optic path and cause some reflection at night

but cause the shadow in your flat

Hi Sam,

Thank you for your feedback. I'm not totally convinced the reflection is in the optic path. This reflection follows the rotation when I rotate only the camera. I think if the reflection was in the optical path the reflection would not follow camea when I rotate the camera. Also, this reflection shows on all three of my scopes. I have a ES102, Celectron C8, as well as a Celestron HD11. I'm not sure if the reflection is totally the answer. If you want take a look each of the Flats I sent via the drop box the other day and see what the average ADU are for each. You should see large swings from each of the frames in the average ADU. Maybe the reflection might account for the red cast I'm getting during processing but Vince, the other person posting on this thread, is having the same issue with having to deal with a red cast during processing.

Is it possible that the reflection as you called it could be coming from the camera dew heater inside the camera?

In the meantime, I'm actually in the process of changing over my scope to the HD11 and I'll see if I can find anything that might be causing reflections in the optical path on the ES102 that I am removing and the HD11 that I am changing to.

Hi Sam,

After I got home from work this evening I took a look and decided to move the OAG prism . By doing so that did eliminate the reflection issue as you pointed out. It was my mistake when I said the spot rotated with the camera. the reason was, I was always doing stacking a calibration and the stacking give me the illusion that the reflection was rotating with the camera.

Anyway, I now have that behind me but I still have the issue shown below when I debayer the flat image. I used PixInsight to debayer using the RGGB and the Demosaicing method of VNG. I tried all of the other Debayer configurations but RGGB appears to be correct. Any Idea on why my flat looks the way it does? I noticed your image that you posted the flat looks much better except for the area that you pointed out about the reflection.

I think the issue now is trying to figure out why the Flat is turning out they way they are. It must be something with the processing since your flat appears correct. I'll continue to test to see if I can figure something out.

you are correct the debayer method is RGGB

I think the flat maybe cause of internal reflection of your optics

you can try to check out with your eyes

the camera just records the incoming light

so you have to find out where is the issue

my early post flat was from your dropbox raw image

maybe just because the shadow is so obvious so the small difference in the flat cannot show up

Hi Sam,

I was able to do more testing tonight.

Here is what I did:

1. I removed the Camera and could not see any reflection that you suggested I look for.

2. I reinstalled the ASI071 Pro Camera and tried several different ADU values to see if that might make a difference in how they might look. There were no noticeable differences between flats having a ADU of approximately 12,000 to flats of approximately 30,000. I actually did these yesterday.

3. I changed the camera to my ATIK 383L+ Color camera and also took flats. I set the target ADU value to 30,000.

The ATIK 383+ Color camera flats were much much better and more uniformed as well as smoother. see images below. At this point I don't know what else to try.

ATIK383 use 8300 sensor, it is much smaller than 017pro.

The flat of 071 you post here, it is not make sense, the corners are brighter than center.

I download your flats, and 071 flats looks good.

Hi Sam,

Maybe I'm doing an extra step with the flats that maybe I should not be doing for these tests. After I Debayer I perform a Automatic Background Extraction, (ABE), in PixInsight. Your images that you're showing only appear to had been debayered. Maybe that is where the confusion is.

From what you're saying, the Flats I sent both from the ASI071 camera and the Atik 383 Camera look good?

I'm still not sure about the red cast I get when processing the images but for now the only way to know is to, when the weather permits, take some new images along with Flats, Bias, and darks to see it everything is cleared up.

Two questions:

1. Do you have a recommendation on what ADU value I should shot for as well as exposure times for the ASI071 Camera when taking Flats? I've always aimed for 30,000 but I read where other folks shot for something around 15,000 for the ASI071 Camera.

2. Bias - Any recommendation on the time? I've always used 0.01 seconds. But again I've read where folks take bias frames at 0.1 seconds.

I still don't fully understand why I never had any of these issues when I was using ASI071 but have them in the ASI071 Pro. I don't really care at this point as long as I can start imaging again and get good results.
