  • Do the ASI Camera's (or CCD's in general) have a "Shutter count"?

Hi folks!
So I'm coming from the DSLR world, prior to getting the ASI6200... and in DSLR's there's a 'lifetime' that you can sort of track, like miles on a car, with the amount of shutter count that a lens has to show the camera's usage and wear and tear etc...
I know this isnt' really a hard age limit but for the CCD camera's like the ASI's, is there anything we can use as a metric for tracking the usage? Is there any real 'wear and tear' or usage benchmark that should be kept track of?
Also when buyign a used one of these , or if I'm selling mine (i'm not...back off!) is there any metric that we use to track the usage?

Yes, there is supposed to be wear and tear on sensors (and with cooling cycles), but it is not something easily quantifiable; and I am not sure any camera failures can be proved to be attributed to sensor failures.

If you are taking images for fun, instead of being part of your career, I don't think you need to worry. In any case, in two or three years, a better camera will be coming along, and you would want to switch anyway, even if your existing camera has not yet failed.

What Sony does with their sensor is to sell two grades -- commercial and industrial. The industrial grade is supposed to have a longer lifetime (and also fewer hot pixels). You can see that (and many other things) mentioned in this Baader white paper/advertisment:

Oh, in one of the comparison pictures, there is mention of OHNE and MIT noise suppression. No, it is not referring to an M.I.T. technology, but are German for "without" and "with." :-) :-)

Thanks Chen! haha, yea when I read MIT I first thought it was an MIT development 🙂 And wow, upgrade every 3 years?? Ugh... I spent like 4k on this... I want to keep it until like 2030!

Hah, I still have my SBIG ST-8300 -- the original one; ordered it before they even released it. I forget now, but it must be 15 or 20 years ago. But that is a quality built camera (power connector has a screw lock, etc).

But the sensor is so small (barely larger than the ASI183) that I haven't used it in many years now. I had a Sony A7h modified for H-alpha, and used it probably no more than 2 years before cooled full frame cameras were sold by everybody and his brother. There is no reason to think that sensor progress has stopped.

Now, when it comes to a telecope, they do last a long time for me. I will be using my FSQ-85 until mold forms on the objective :-).
