Mr_Cellophane Is there any real 'wear and tear' or usage benchmark that should be kept track of?
Yes, there is supposed to be wear and tear on sensors (and with cooling cycles), but it is not something easily quantifiable; and I am not sure any camera failures can be proved to be attributed to sensor failures.
If you are taking images for fun, instead of being part of your career, I don't think you need to worry. In any case, in two or three years, a better camera will be coming along, and you would want to switch anyway, even if your existing camera has not yet failed.
What Sony does with their sensor is to sell two grades -- commercial and industrial. The industrial grade is supposed to have a longer lifetime (and also fewer hot pixels). You can see that (and many other things) mentioned in this Baader white paper/advertisment:

Oh, in one of the comparison pictures, there is mention of OHNE and MIT noise suppression. No, it is not referring to an M.I.T. technology, but are German for "without" and "with." :-) :-)
